September Sizzles At The Crocker

If you haven’t yet seen “Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose,” one of the finest exhibits of the last few years at Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum, you have until September 17th to catch that thrilling show before it closes.

While you’re at the museum, make sure you also see the recent acquisition of a self-portrait by the great gay painter Don Bachardy, which hangs in a different gallery on the same floor near “Turn the Page.”

A World Premiere Musical Set For Berkeley Rep

Northern California theater fans are in for a treat later this month, when a brand new, world premiere musical from the director of “Jersey Boys” opens at Berkeley Rep Theatre.

The highly anticipated new musical “Ain’t Too Proud: The Temptations Musical” charts the life and times of the group that many music fans and music critics consider the greatest R&B group of all time.

Radical Politics and Outlaw Passions Subject of Author Talk at Lavender Library

Marie Equi defied expectations. A daughter of working-class, immigrant parents, she became a physician and a fierce advocate for women, laborers and free speech.

The FBI branded her a dangerous agitator, but she didn’t back down. One of the first publicly known lesbians on the West Coast, Equi was maligned by the U.S. Government as “an unsexed woman” before sentencing her to San Quentin prison for protesting World War I.

Bette Midler & Ben Platt Rock Broadway

The 2017 Tony Awards may be history, but most of this year’s nominated productions are still playing in New York City, and several of the winners are breaking records at the box office.

Better late than never, here are reviews of the eight musicals I saw during my annual pre-Tony’s trip to the Big Apple, where actors Bette Midler (‘Hello, Dolly!’) and Ben Platt (‘Dear Evan Hansen’) are the toast of the town.
