September Sizzles At The Crocker

by Chris Narloch

If you haven’t yet seen “Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose,” one of the finest exhibits of the last few years at Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum, you have until September 17th to catch that thrilling show before it closes.

While you’re at the museum, make sure you also see the recent acquisition of a self-portrait by the great gay painter Don Bachardy, which hangs in a different gallery on the same floor near “Turn the Page.”

Two other not-to-be-missed events at the Crocker occur this September and involve a celebration of comic books and cosplay, plus a separate screening of one of my all-time favorite Japanese films.

ArtMix Crocker Con
KA-POW! The fifth annual ArtMix Crocker Con is about to take off.

Trekkies and Whovians, young and old, don your capes for an evening of out-of-this-world performances, DJs, local comic book legends, and fun-loving vendors, plus live character sketching, panel talks, podcasts, and a parade of cosplay.

For this ArtMix, all ages are welcome, and adults can enjoy $6 drink specials all night. ArtMix Crocker Con will blast off on September 14th, from 6-9:30 p.m.

Fall Foreign Film Series
Billed as the first Japanese noodle western, ‘Tampopo,’ which was released in the U.S. in 1987, is remembered fondly by those who saw it as one of the funniest foodie films ever made.

An homage to ramen, ‘Tampopo’ dishes out hilarity in a series of vignettes all loosely based around the plight of a small ramen shop.

Produced in the style of a Spaghetti Western (or as it was dubbed early on, “Ramen Western”), Tampopo received a 4-star review from the late, great Roger Ebert, who called it a “tour de force” and “universally funny.”

Before the screening, Chef Yasushi Ueyama, the owner of local restaurant Shoki Ramen, will demonstrate the fine art of noodle making and sake-tasting as a first course to the film.

The ramen presentation is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on September 7th, with the screening of ‘Tampopo’ afterwards, at 6:30 p.m.
