Pope Benedict XVI just happens to be one of my favorite people. After all, thanks to a column I wrote about him last year, this column was honored as the best newspaper column in America in our circulation category.

That column, called “Shut up, Pope,” covered his holiness’ travels through AIDS-ridden Africa spewing abstinence and urging the non-use of condoms — a deadly message in an area of poverty, lack of education and sexual misinformation.

Catholic League's Misleading Ad Smears GaysBill Donahue

The Catholic League and its President Bill Donohue have placed a full-page ad in the New York Times, trying to deflect blame for the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church by smearing the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

The ad, which was placed March 30, came under immediate attack from LGBT groups, including Truth Wins Out, which has been monitoring the scandal.

Lawsuit Settled On Behalf of Bullied Gay Teen

A gay teenage student identified only as J.L has reached an out-of-court settlement in a case filed because of the continued student-on-student harassment and bullying he received in his upstate NY high school while school administrators took no action to prevent it.

The U.S. Justice Department and the New York Civil Liberties Union reached the settlement in the matter of J.L. v. Mohawk Central School District, which alleged violations of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, both of which prohibit discrimination based on sex, including discrimination based on gender stereotypes.

Stylists to Hold Cut-A-Thon to Benefit NorCal AIDS Challengecutathon

A great haircut at a great price can’t be beat, so when it benefits a great cause – even better. That’s the idea behind the first ever Cut-A-Thon, as stylists from across Sacramento support the 2010 NorCal AIDS Challenge.

The Cut-A-Thon, created by stylist and Space 07’s owner Ken Schultz, will help fund the 330-mile, four-day NorCal cycling ride from May 20-23, beginning in Folsom. Proceeds from the ride help fund Central Valley HIV/AIDS service providers and research.
