Getting to Know Gay Beirut (and Beyond)
San Francisco, Barcelona, Sydney, and … Beirut? Yalla Habibi! As surprising as it sounds, the buzz is building around Beirut, Lebanon as a gay destination.
The New York Times dubbed Lebanon’s capital “the Provincetown of the Middle East” in a 2009 article and the winter 2010 edition of Netherlands-based Winq magazine devoted eight pages to the city, citing its emergence as “the (gay) party capital of the Middle East.”

Among the many online condolences to the family of Chad Noel (”Jim and Bonnie, so sorry to hear of the loss of your son…”) are glimpses of the boy this young man was, while growing up in the ironic hometown of Laramie, Wyoming (where Matthew Shepard lived and perished).
Noel, 25, died last month, reportedly of AIDS-related complications.
Fifth Annual Davis Feminist Film Festival Set to Open
The Consortium for Women and Research, in collaboration with Film Studies, is presenting the 2010 Davis Feminist Film Festival, a grassroots event that uses alternative media as a springboard for linking art to social issues.
The goal of the festival is to showcase independent film spanning documentary, narrative, and experimental genres in order to explore perspectives often missing from mainstream media and culture.
HHS Awards $1.84 Billion in Grants for HIV/AIDS Care and Medications
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on April 5, 2010, the release of more than $1.84 billion to ensure that people living with HIV/AIDS continue to have access to life-saving health care and medications. The grants are funded through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, which helps more than half a million individuals every year obtain clinical care, treatment and social support services.
"These grants help ensure Americans, especially those in underserved rural and urban communities, affected by HIV/AIDS get access to the care they need through quality health care and support systems," Secretary Sebelius said. "The care and services these grants support will help Americans living with HIV/AIDS to live longer, healthier lives."
Lesbian DA Ends Campaign to Become Judge

Anne Marie Schubert, the conservative Sacramento County Deputy District Attorney who made headlines late last year when California's LGBT community learned she was the lesbian, domestically partnered sister of Proposition 8 mastermind Frank Schubert, has ended her conservative, law and order candidacy for Sacramento County Superior Court judge following a last-minute appointment by California's Governor.
Anne Marie Schubert quietly ended her campaign early February after Judge Ken Peterson's days-earlier-than-anticipated retirement gave Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger the chance at another judicial appointment before leaving office at the end of the year.
