Star Trek Beams Onto DVD and Blu-ray
by Chris NarlochIt has been slim pickings at the Red Box lately, but these two new DVDs are definitely worth a rental (or a purchase, if you’re looking for the perfect Xmas gift for that special someone.)
Star Trek
I hope the Oscars remember this unusually good summer blockbuster next year when it comes time to fill out those ten (!) nominations for Best Picture. The film is probably too commercial for the Academy, and it probably came out too early in the year to get a nod, but I loved it. J.J. Abrams achieved the near-impossible task of making Star Trek hip again for a whole new generation while not alienating the diehard fans.
A clever script with humor and heart, nimble direction, and a sexy cast helped make this the best Star Trek film since Wrath of Khan.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Live
If you’re a fan of classic rock, this DVD set is an essential addition to your collection. For the last 25 years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has honored the most influential figures of the rock era at prestigious induction ceremonies featuring once-in-a-lifetime tributes and musical collaborations.
This 3-disc set captures 55 of those exclusive performances, plus over four hours of bonus features – rare, behind-the-scenes material, rehearsal footage and complete Hall of Fame induction speeches.
If you buy the set at Best Buy, you get an exclusive bonus DVD of highlights from The Concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with performances by the Allman Brothers, The Kinks, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty and many more.
