If you picked up almost any newspaper in the nation Monday, you would have seen an article about the proposed Islamic Cultural Center near ground zero in Manhattan. The Washington Post story, “Other mosque proposals also face opposition,” examines how there is growing opposition to mosques in other cities around the country.
The New York Times decided to go political: “Lazio Finds an Issue in Furor Over Islamic Center.” Lazio, the Republican running for governor of New York, opposes the mosque at its present proposed site.
Calif. Legislature Calls on President, Congress to End DOMA Marriage Discrimination

The California Legislature has approved a resolution by Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, calling for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, which discriminates against married same-sex couples.
“President Obama has called this law abhorrent in the way it denies more than 1,000 federal rights to same-sex couples,” Assemblywoman Brownley said. “Congress must act now to overturn DOMA, which is rooted in irrational and unfounded prejudice. Married same-sex couples deserve equal access to these benefits.”

White House Discloses Commitment to Prioritizing HIV/AIDS

The Obama Administration is taking new action to prioritize support for Federal HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs, and is sending to the Congress an amendment to the President’s FY 2011 budget request to increase HIV/AIDS funding by $65 million.
This is comprised of a requested $35 million increase for HIV prevention in order to continue exciting new HIV prevention activities described below to support the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and a $30 million increase for State AIDS drug assistance programs to respond to the ongoing crisis States are facing in operating these essential programs.
