A Night of Mystery, Music, and Mayhem at STC,  Plus The Pirates of Penzance

Our Arts and Entertainment Editor Chris Narloch has two theatre recommendations for you, a very special night of mystery dinner theater and the classic Gilbert and Sullivan light opera filled with pirates and laughs.

Sacramento Theatre Company (STC) has a fun night planned at the Solomon Dubnick Gallery, on Saturday, February 25, to benefit STC and their School of the Arts. In connection with the theme for their 2011-2012 Season, STC will present “A Night of Mystery, Music, and Mayhem.”

Guests will dine alongside twelve of the most recognizable detectives of all time from the world of film, theatre and literature. (Actors from past productions of Sacramento Theatre Company will portray favorites such as Sherlock Holmes, Dick Tracy, Sam Spade, and Inspector Clouseau.)

Seating is limited to 120 guests, and one detective will dine at each table. Detectives will be assigned to guest tables on a first-come, first-served basis. Cocktails and a silent auction begin at 7 pm, with dinner at 8 pm and dancing at 9:30 pm.

Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento celebrates its 31st season with Gilbert & Sullivan’s swashbuckling musical comedy The Pirates of Penzance. Goofy, irreverent, and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, Pirates follows the story of an orphan boy who was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate instead of a ship’s pilot.

One of the most popular operettas ever written, The Pirates of Penzance is a hilarious farce featuring soft-hearted pirates, a bumbling policeman, impressionistic young ladies, and an eccentric Major-General. Unforgettable melodies abound, including Poor Wandering One and the tongue-twisting I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General.
